In the past decade or so, Penn Quarter, the neighborhood south of Chinatown, has gone from an area that was often abandoned after working hours to the city’s most round-the-clock neighborhood for nightlife and entertainment. Royal Jelly is the latest concept from Los Angeles-based nightclub operator Ivan Kane, who has opened - and closed - a series of clubs in Las Vegas, Hollywood and Atlantic City, each aimed at kindling nostalgia for early 20th-century burlesque shows, featuring a jazz trio, elaborate costumes and stripteases.įor the Washington location he is eyeing, in the basement of the former offices of a charity for blind veterans at 477 H Street Northwest, Kane said he imagines a “jazz club and speakeasy kind of vibe.” It would be open six days a week, feature “Broadway-level” performances and add to the excitement of the neighborhood, Kane said. ![]() ![]() Burlesque shows may arrive in Washington by way of Royal Jelly, a club proposed in Chinatown that would add a new - some would say bawdy - source of entertainment to a city taking on a more cosmopolitan identity as a host of new restaurants, theaters, galleries and bars move in.
